Our Townhouse

Our House at Christmas
At the end of 2006, Melissa purchased a townhouse in Canton, GA.  It's located in Franklin Park, a town home neighborhood in a larger, village-like development called River Green.  (More Pictures Coming Soon.)  This is the same development her parents had moved to the year before.  The big move from her apartment to a "real" house happened in February of 2007, just in time for Superbowl Weekend.  The house has 3 bedrooms upstairs, 2-1/2 bathrooms, and an open downstairs layout with  a kitchen overlooking the dining area, which in turn opens into the living room.  It's the perfect size for a starter home and located in a great neighborhood with lots of amenities!  You'll often find us making good use of the fitness center at the Heritage Club, or shooting hoops and playing tennis in "Central Park."  When the weather's nice we also have our pick of several walking trails, some of which take us to the Etowah River.

While Melissa had plenty of furniture to fill the space when she first move in, she saved most of the decorating for a time when she'd have someone to share the fun with!  When J. B. moved in right after the wedding we got started with the process a short time later.  We have had a lot of fun making our house a home and adding pieces that reflect our tastes.  Despite everything we've accomplished so far, there's still a lot that we'd like to do, but we have really made a lot of progress since the wedding!

The Entrance Hall

The first piece to make its way into the hall was the piano that Melissa took lessons on growing up.  Once she was out of the apartment, her parents gave it to her to use in the new house--not that she's really tinkled the ivories too much since having it available though--it's something she's slowly trying to get back into!
The next step was figuring out how to get more storage in the entrance hall, as there's no closet. After a long search, we finally found a great hall tree to hide shoes in and hang purses on, which is a big help.  Our mail and key organizer (by Home Interiors) is also a welcome addition as it's helped keep us from misplacing keys so much!  Though it didn't keep Melissa from accidentally taking J. B.'s keys and leaving him stranded at home one day, oops!

The Living Room

Our first step in making some changes to the house was to go furniture shopping for a new living room furniture set.  The sleeper sofa Melissa had gotten when she first moved to Atlanta was in sad shape and the room was in need of a style update, on top of that.  We found an awesome sofa-love seat set with beautiful cherry wood accent tables--they are the perfect complement to the existing TV cabinet that Melissa's grandfather built and we are now lucky enough to own.  Coordinating lamps that our local furniture store had displayed with the furniture were thrown into the mix and our new living room was born!
A few months after our wedding, we received out gift from one of Melissa's cousins--he graciously gave us the mantle clock that his father had made for Melissa's grandparents. This piece has a great deal of sentimental value for Melissa and her family, as it was in her grandparents' house for many years. Now it will be in our houses for many more! Right now it sits perfectly on the wall shelf above the love seat, by our wedding portrait--this picture needs an update, however, as we now have some beautiful candles where the vase of flowers is!
Of course, our recliner now stood in need of improvement next to all that new furniture so we ordered a nice red slipcover to go with the other red accent pieces that we are slowly accumulating.  At Kirkland's, we recently found some great wall art to go over the recliner.  We also came across some sharp red accent pillows for the furniture that really helped to pull the living room together.  Another addition after awhile was a beautiful corner bookshelf that we also got at the local furniture store.
Another addition in early 2009 was a bookshelf to hold Melissa's cookbooks. We fit it in by the entertainment center and it worked out pretty well there. Unfortunately, we do not have a current picture (don't worry, we'll update soon!), but this is how the set-up looked before the new bookshelf. The blanket rack is now located just outside the living room, in the entrance hall. And yes, the TV was also a present to ourselves last summer =P
